On April 29, 2019, the first meeting of heads of educational research institutes in Spain took place at the University of Barcelona. The objective of the meeting was to establish the bases to officially establish a state network of educational research institutes (Red de Institutes de Investigación en Educación).
The RIIE was presented to the academic community during the I International Congress on Research in Education (IRED’19), held in Barcelona, on October 4-5, 2019.
During the II International Congress on Research in Education (IRED’21), held in Salamanca from 3 to 5 November 2021, a meeting was held between the institutes of the network with the aim of increasing the number of institutes that will be part of RIIE.
The RIIE is made up of 9 institutes:

- Instituto Universitario de Ciencias de la Educación (IUCE). Universidad de Salamanca
- Instituto Universitario de Investigación y Prospección Educativa (INPEX). Universidad de Extremadura.
- Instituto Universitario de Investigación en Formación de profesionales de la Educación. Universidad de Málaga.
